Mean Girls Review

In the film Mean Girls gender roles did not exist as much as stereo types did. In the movie it shows how catty and rude girls are together because they just want to make it to the top of the high school social rank. It shows that girls think they are loved even when they are truly hated by everyone around them which isn't always the case of popularity. Popularity is being liked by many people and in this film it shows popularity as the opposite. Girls thinking they're loved even though they are hated.

But, Mean Girls wasn't only about the girls; it was also about male stereotypes too. It portrays most of the men in the movie as pigs just always thinking about sex. The only male that wasn't about sex the whole time was the "prince charming" who actually cared and had feelings, a good guy. Although the movie was all stereotypes that's what it was meant in order to be to prove a point about gender stereotypes. I feel this movie was a great movie for the gender roles and stereotypes we are learning about in this class.

  1. This is very true Taylor... In the movie it focuses a lot about going to the top of the social rank and how they don't care how they get there or who they hurt in the process. The movie also shows how men just want sex which for a lot of men is true but there is a large portion that aren't like that in the world. Other than that i still don't think there was a lot of gender roles that we talked about in class because we talk about men being the superior gender and in the movie it was not like that at all. The movie is more based on girls than it is on men being higher in social, economical, and other ranks.

    1. I agree with you Taylor that the movie is very stereotypical. Although I do not agree that the movie is a good way to learn about the gender roles and stereotyoes that we are learning about in class because times have changed. Like Jessica said, men are pereived to always want to have sex but there are also a ton of men that could care less about sex. Times of changed a lot since your typical high school jock and high school nerd. Today we are seeing more and more "jocks" doing well in school and more "nerds" doing great things in the athletic world. We are also seeing a huge increase in women working and men staying at home. Times have changed and the movie only gives us something to laugh at.

  2. I feel in most teenage high school type movies that gender roles don't really appear as much as stereotypes do. Its not like the directors are creating new stereotypes for theses movies either. They are the same old guys are pigs and girls are ruthless towards each other to get an edge on the other. Making females pretty much compete with each other well guys all bond together with ease.
